SEREIAS

Released towards the end of November 2019, ‘O País A Arder’ (‘The Country Burning’, in English), is the instant classic debut album of Porto band Sereias and probably unlike anything we’ve heard in this country – improvisation over a rock and roll base, or the freedom of jazz combined with the savagery of punk in a way which reminds us of Can and The Fall, with vocalist, poet and former Presidential candidate António Pedro Ribeiro’s corrosive poems reminding us of Adolfo Luxúria Canibal’s abandon and shouting at us exactly what we needed to hear without realizing we needed it.

It’s an exercise in restraint to avoid further hyperbole when describing Sereias, believe us.

The real vanguard worker’s band is – of course – from Barreiro. Using rock and noise as the base for their improvisation, this trio’s music can be described as working class no wave, resulting from a mixture of personalities as different from each other as they are profoundly real and intense. It’s been two years since we’ve last had them on one of our shows and we missed them.
