Pedro Alves Sousa's artistic residency at AMAC

Over the past week in Barreiro, we’ve hosted the saxophonist and composer extraordinaire Pedro Alves Sousa, in an artistic residency at Auditório Municipal Augusto Cabrita, where the musician has been working and developing his opera/installation/performance “A Vaia Viva”, his own adaptation of Julio Cortázar’s story “Las babas del diablo”.

In this residency, the main focus is centered around the development of this composition, making use of amps and reel-to-reel tape recorders, and on Sunday the 27th, we invite everyone to a presentation of his work so far, as an open rehearsal, held at the musician’s workspace, located deep in AMAC’s backrooms.

Entry is free, and the audience must gather at AMAC’s main atrium by 5PM so that as a group, through half secret stairways and hallways, we can all meet the musician.

SONICA EKRANO 2022

Right after an OUT.FEST that we all still feel not only under the skin but also with our ears and hearts, it’s an enormous pleasure to announce the 2nd edition of SONICA EKRANO – Documentary Film and the Musical Fringes, which will be held between the 21st and 29th of October in Barreiro.

SONICA EKRANO is dedicated to the music, musicians, sounds and movements on the fringes of massification and popularity, and aims to provide the opportunity to watch cinematic works that, even in this digital era, are hard to access, striving to contribute to a bigger audiovisual inclusion, as well as being mindful of geographic diversity and the equilibrium of historical perspectives and contemporary narratives.

This second edition presents 15 films, with almost half being exhibited for the first time in Portugal – highlighting the world premiere of “Na Corda Bamba”, the new film by the director Luís Fernandes, which follows the experimental music scene in Portugal, or “Universe”, , a documentary that broaches a series of compositions written by Wayne Shorter for the legendary Miles Davis, which awaited for decades to be released. For the remaining programme, we also have films portraying artists such as Lydia Lunch, Fela Kuti, Poly Styrene, Tangerine Dream ou Telectu, among others.

The screenings will be dividided between the Castello Lopes cinema in Fórum Barreiro, the local Cineclube, the Munincipal Library of Barreiro and Auditório Municipal Augusto Cabrita. The price of the ticketfor each session is 2,5€, with a general pass also available in limited numbers that grants access to all screenings for 10€ only.

SONICA EKRANO - Documentary film & the musical fringes

Today we're happy to announce the inception of a new film festival: "SONICA EKRANO - Documentary film & the musical fringes", which will take place between the 9th and 18th of September in Barreiro and Baixa da Banheira (Moita Municipality). 

The name SONICA EKRANO, written in Esperanto (meaning “Sound Screen” in English), seeks to reflect both music and cinema as “universal languages”, while also honouring the strong esperantist tradition in the south bank of the Tagus river.

This new festival is dedicated to the music, musicians, sounds and movements at the edges of massification and popularity, creating a new space to provide the opportunity to watch cinematic works which remain (even in an age of digital platforms with on-demand content) hard to access, contributing to an increased audiovisual inclusiveness, striving to present a diversity of geographies and strike a balance between historical perspective and contemporary narratives.

This first edition will present 13 feature-length films, almost half of them national premieres, and the full programme will be revealed by the middle of August at the festival's website: www.sonicaekrano.com

This festival is created by OUT.RA - Associação Cultural with co-financing by ICA and in partnership with the Barreiro and Moita Municipalities.

Uma exposição no Auditório Municipal Augusto Cabrita

Por ocasião das comemorações do 80º Aniversário da Água Pública no Barreiro, “mergulhámos” durante alguns meses na complexa rede que sustenta o abastecimento e saneamento de águas na cidade, à procura dos sons que a caracterizam – dos locais, dos processos e da maquinaria, das pessoas.

O resultado desta documentação sonora é um amplo arquivo que ilustra uma dimensão quase toda ela oculta, um retrato feito de sons de estruturas invisíveis das quais conhecemos quase só o resultado final – quando abrimos a torneira lá de casa e a água, esse bem supremamente essencial a todos aparece, como por magia, à medida das nossas necessidades.

Esta exposição ilustra esse processo de documentação e coloca em evidência as relações possíveis entre a Água e o Som, enquanto paisagem auditiva, enquanto retrato daquilo que não se vê, e enquanto matéria para a música.

80 Anos de Água Pública no Barreiro – Programação OUT.RA

A OUT.RA – Associação Cultural associa-se ao município do Barreiro nas comemorações que assinalam, em 2017, os 80 Anos da Rede Pública de Abastecimento de Água do Concelho. 
 
Depois do lançamento da Open Call para performances no Reservatório Elevado do Alto da Paiva, que conta já com mais de uma centena de respostas de músicos e artistas sonoros de quatro continentes, é agora anunciado o programa de actividades construído na relação entre a Água e o Som, a levar a cabo entre Abril e Setembro do corrente ano.
 
Uma das vertentes da programação agora anunciada está intimamente ligada à documentação sonora das várias estruturas que compõem a Rede Municipal de Águas e Saneamento, nas quais têm vindo a ser desenvolvidas captações desde o passado mês de Novembro. A partir destes, será montada uma exposição, a inaugurar no final de Junho no Auditório Municipal Augusto Cabrita, que procurará ilustrar a dimensão sonora oculta desta complexa rede que se estende por todo o Concelho.
 
Em Setembro, este arquivo sonoro – que expandirá também o acervo já existente de retratos sonoros do Concelho decorrente do projecto Sons do Arco Ribeirinho Sul – será disponibilizado ao público numa plataforma online.
 
Antes, no final de Maio, terá lugar a anunciada performance no Reservatório Elevado do Alto da Paiva, onde os quatro artistas seleccionados no decurso da Open Call poderão juntar estes documentos sonoros aos seus próprios materiais musicais.
 
A segunda vertente da programação trabalha o espaço público e a criação musical relacionada com a Água e com os materiais presentes na sua rede de distribuição, procurando ir para além do ano em que se assinala este 80º aniversário da Água Pública no Concelho.
 
Assim, já no final de Abril será inaugurada a escultura sonora Boron, da autoria do Srosh Ensemble (um colectivo de músicos sediado no Porto, dedicado à execução de instrumentos não convencionais), com uma estrutura  que permite utilizar o escoamento das águas pluviais para produzir padrões rítmicos percutidos nos objectos metálicos que estas encontram. 
 
Em Julho, será instalado na frente ribeirinha da cidade um conjunto de instrumentos musicais de acesso público, fazendo uso de alguns dos materiais encontrados nas várias estruturas que compõem a Rede Municipal de Águas e Saneamento.
