ZIMA present "Grão de Luz" ("Grain of Light") - with Tiago Sousa

ZIMA continues her search for ways into living and experiencing music, with no interest in categorization or qualification, or even a place in history. A project with an almost child-like belief and attitude, which strives to become an open space dedicated to the idea of freedom and the transformation of desires - a playground for instinct.

ZIMA invites musician Tiago Sousa - interestingly, the first recipient of OUT.RA’S creative grant. This encounter came to be due to an interest in starting a dialogue between both sides’ respective (in)experiences through sensibility and disquiet, recognizing and incorporating the particularities of each part of the whole and questioning the scale of the possible differences, originating a new body from the collage of the three participants.

ZIMA & Tiago Sousa present Grão de Luz (“Grain of Light”), the second public presentation of Marta and Sara’s project, the recipient of one of three OUT.RA Creative Grants for 2020: the day before the shortest day of the year - the one marking the transition between a long decrease in the presence and intensity of the sun, to a long ascension - ZIMA & Tiago Sousa strive to bring part of that phenomenon to S.D.U.B ‘Os Franceses’. To allow, through this event, listeners to experience that sensation of what growing in opposite directions might be like, despite being part of one same nature. To travel through the minimums and maximums of one thing, of three things, of everything. To sail through the waves of disaster and hope, without always requiring light to see. Perhaps a dance will be found in the music. Maybe it’ll be seen. Maybe it’ll be heard. Always revealing by hiding. Always illuminating by obscuring. Or everything, everything upside down.

ZIMA presents "Nuvem de Pó"

"Nuvem de Pó" ("Dust Cloud") is the first of several public presentations of the work developed by ZIMA (Sara Zita Correia e Marta Ramos), two creatives whose background is rooted in dance and performance and who have been investing themselves in the research of sound as a complementary and non-academic method of self-descovery.

"Zima is Marta and Sara together, in a search for the externalisation of their volatile shapes - unstable and dreaming - of existing, observing and interpreting that condition. Coming from dance, performance and design, but more interested in a personal and artistic investigation than on their hypothetical talents, that place of freedom seemed very appealing and thus they wanted to assume ZIMA as a real project. They have been coming together to experiment with means they had never explored before: musical instruments, their voices, (their) poetry... with a naive and minimalist approach, almost light, but which acquires new dimensions with the symbolic layers which they end up forcing upon it. You can imagine an experience which contains everything that Marta and Sara consider to better speak for them.

.

ZIMA are sound and visual moments of that search of the inner world and the unknown.

.

"Nuvem de pó" is one of those fragments where you can see natural disasters, human and personal, but where among the impending danger, ZIMA survives.

Concerts return to Barreiro

For four saturdays between August 29th and September 19th, as part of the "Paz & Amizade" cycle, we will host concerts by Vaiapraia, Lula Pena, Rodrigo Amado com Ricardo Toscano, João Lencastre e Hernâni Faustino, as well as a brand new performance by local musician Fast Eddie Nelson (on September 19th) whom we've challenged to create a show around Pink Floyd, entitled "Between Barrett and the Moon" which, as the name suggests, will explore the expansive legacy of the British quartet focusing on their releases in the period between Syd Barrett's departure and the massive success of "Dark Side of the Moon".

Before that, on August 29th, Vaiapraia will open this concert cycle with their recent (and highly praised) new album "100% Carisma"; on September 5th the idiosyncratic singer-songwriter Lula Pena takes the stage, fresh off an Italian mini-tour; and on September 12th we'lll host a quartet which brings together several currents of jazz in the form of the union of the two most celebrated Portuguese saxophone players (Rodrigo Amado and Ricardo Toscano) with drummer João Lencastre and double bassist Hernâni Faustino.

These concerts will take place in the late afternoon (18:30) at the open air amphitheatre at the Paz e Amizade Park, a seldom used space inaugurated in 1983, whose name (which translates to Peace and Friendship Park) comes from the anti-nuclear proliferation events which occurred during the summer of that same year in Czechoslovakia.

Tickets (5€ or 2,5€ for under 25-year-olds) are already on sale at outra.bol.pt and associated points of sale, and we strongly recommend that you purchase them in advance to comply with the Directorate-General for Health recommendations. For that same reason, hand sanitization and wearing a mask will be mandatory at the event, and the venue's capacity will be limited to ensure a safe distance between all attending.

Live music will in fact return to Barreiro one day prior to this however, on August 28th, with a show by the recipients of one of the three OUT.RA creative grants for 2020:  “Nuvem de Pó” is the first of several public presentations of the work developed by ZIMA (Sara Zita Correia e Marta Ramos), two creatives whose background is rooted in dance and performance and who have been investing themselves in the research of sound as a complementary and non-academic method of self-descovery. This show will take place at SDUB “Os Franceses” at 21h30, with admittance being free of chage subject to the venue's capacity and a mandatory reservation made in advance by e-mailing info@outra.pt, and also to the Directorate-General of Health's guidelines.

2020 Creation Grant: Three projects selected in response to these exceptional times

Due to the current status of the local artistic community, OUT.RA - Associação Cultural felt the need to provide our support to creatives and their creations in a more significant manner and have thus made the decision to, exceptionally, award three projects with our Local Creation Grant for 2020.

This annual grant has been awarded since 2016 to musicians and audiovisual artists residing in Barreiro and the surrounding urban areas in order to create and present original works. This year, each of the selected projects will be supported with 1000€ in order to achieve its aims and host at least one public presentation (when possible) of the work developed.

The projects selected cover a wide range of audio and visual creations and their intersection: the cross between sound experimentation and dance proposed by Sara Zita Correia and Marta Ramos, the multi-channel video installation devised by Camila Vale and the composition of three satellite-pieces to a contemporary opera by João Quinteiro.

Throughout the following months we'll be revealing more details regarding the selected projects and their journey towards completion.
