OUT.RA's Local Creation Grant 2023 – Winner announced

Leonardo Bindilatti is the recipient of OUT.RA’s Local Creation Grant for 2023.

Co-founder of Cafetra Records, drummer of the incredible Putas Bêbadas, half of the sweeties Iguanas, solo master beatmaker as Rabu Mazda, DJ (Music), sound technician and all-around agitator, Leo’s arrival to Barreiro a good three years ago was a valuable addition to the local panorama.

2023’s Local Creation Grant will serve to further explore the drums (his “preferred” instrument) and to develop and present a record with a specific focus on “the idea of beatmaking and live mixing, the use of the mixing board to make dub, a sonority that’s blended and purposefully saturated, within the composition of electronic music, dance, punk and noise, with simple and minimal melodies and short voice notes.”

Pedro Alves Sousa's artistic residency at AMAC

Over the past week in Barreiro, we’ve hosted the saxophonist and composer extraordinaire Pedro Alves Sousa, in an artistic residency at Auditório Municipal Augusto Cabrita, where the musician has been working and developing his opera/installation/performance “A Vaia Viva”, his own adaptation of Julio Cortázar’s story “Las babas del diablo”.

In this residency, the main focus is centered around the development of this composition, making use of amps and reel-to-reel tape recorders, and on Sunday the 27th, we invite everyone to a presentation of his work so far, as an open rehearsal, held at the musician’s workspace, located deep in AMAC’s backrooms.

Entry is free, and the audience must gather at AMAC’s main atrium by 5PM so that as a group, through half secret stairways and hallways, we can all meet the musician.

SONICA EKRANO 2022

Right after an OUT.FEST that we all still feel not only under the skin but also with our ears and hearts, it’s an enormous pleasure to announce the 2nd edition of SONICA EKRANO – Documentary Film and the Musical Fringes, which will be held between the 21st and 29th of October in Barreiro.

SONICA EKRANO is dedicated to the music, musicians, sounds and movements on the fringes of massification and popularity, and aims to provide the opportunity to watch cinematic works that, even in this digital era, are hard to access, striving to contribute to a bigger audiovisual inclusion, as well as being mindful of geographic diversity and the equilibrium of historical perspectives and contemporary narratives.

This second edition presents 15 films, with almost half being exhibited for the first time in Portugal – highlighting the world premiere of “Na Corda Bamba”, the new film by the director Luís Fernandes, which follows the experimental music scene in Portugal, or “Universe”, , a documentary that broaches a series of compositions written by Wayne Shorter for the legendary Miles Davis, which awaited for decades to be released. For the remaining programme, we also have films portraying artists such as Lydia Lunch, Fela KutiPoly StyreneTangerine Dream ou Telectu, among others.

The screenings will be dividided between the Castello Lopes cinema in Fórum Barreiro, the local Cineclube, the Munincipal Library of Barreiro and Auditório Municipal Augusto Cabrita. The price of the ticketfor each session is 2,5€, with a general pass also available in limited numbers that grants access to all screenings for 10€ only.

The full programme can be viewed at www.sonicaekrano.com

Last fifteen names announced for the 18th edition of OUT.FEST – Barreiro International Exploratory Music Festival, which will occur between the 5th and 8th of October, a lineup that includes a grand total of 30 acts and 2 talks with artists in a variety of venues in the center of the city, making it the biggest and most extensive lineup of the festival’s history.

Along with the previously announced names, of which we highlight the Japanese PHEW, the North-American NICOLE MITCHELL and PRISON RELIGION, the British DAVID TOOP or the Portuguese SEREIAS and LUÍS FERNANDES, OUT.FEST now announces the Portuguese premiere of the North-American CLAIRE ROUSAY or the collaboration between the British RICHARD DAWSON or the Finnish CIRCLE, as well as the return of names like RP BOO, EVE RISSER e AUDREY CHEN, along with the world premiere of national projects, such as the installation “A Segunda Natureza” by OUT.RA grant recipient RITA SANTOS and the GEORGE SILVER & GOLD quartet, an expansion of George Silver’s solo work following an invitation by the festival’s organization.

OUT.FEST 2022 continues the tradition of making full use of the various venues in Barreiro, with a special spotlight on the opening concert, which marks the first time that the festival extends to the historic and emblematic CP train workshops, one of the 10 different stages that will host the event throughout the 4 days.

The remaining global passes, priced at 30€, and the day tickets (with prices ranging from 8€ to 15€) can be acquired via BOL and associated stores.

OUT.FEST 2022: new confirmations

Three new names have been announced for the 18th edition of OUT.FEST – Barreiro International Exploratory Music Festival, which will take place between October 5th and 8th, with close to thirty concerts taking place in various different venues throughout the city centre.

The North-American AMIRTHA KIDAMBI will present her quartet ELDER ONES, an acclaimed formation that crosses contemporary jazz with the Indian influences and roots of its leader, while the Australian percussionist WILL GUTHRIE will be accompanied by the Parisian ensemble NIST-NAH, where together they will pay homage and build new worlds of sound via the traditional gamelan from Indonesia. Meanwhile, the British DAVID TOOP will make a rare live appearance, bringing with him more than four decades of his repertoire as a musician, writer and thinker of music, sound and listening in its multiple facets. Beyond the concerts, these artists will take part in open talks with the public about the work they bring to the festival as part of REMAIIN, a European project organised by entities from four countries, whose purpose is to showcase extra-European influences in current and historic avant-garde music.

A reminder that OUT.FEST has announced thirteen other names in the beginning of July, which include the Japanese PHEW,, the North-Americans NICOLE MITCHELL and PRISON RELIGION, as well as the Portuguese SEREIAS and LUÍS FERNANDES.

Festival passes can be purchased for 30€ via BOL and its associated points of sale: https://outra.bol.pt/

OUT.FEST 2022: First artists confirmed

The first confirmed artists have been announced for the 18th edition of OUT.FEST - Barreiro International Exploratory Music Festival, which will take place between October 5th and 8th in a return to its usual format, with close to thirty concerts taking place in several venues throughout the city centre.

Japanese artist PHEW, a unique and intriguing voice with a career spanning over four decades, and North-American flutist NICOLE MITCHELL, a key name in this century’s new American Jazz, are two of the leading names in this first group of thirteen confirmed artists, which also includes the claustrophobic rap of the North-American duo PRISON RELIGION, the indie mystery of British group BAR ITALIA, a new band whose music is released by Dean Blunt’s World Music label, Porto’s SEREIAS, who have just released a new and incendiary self-titled album, Brazilian-born, Porto-based artist DIBUK, the return of Italian producer STILL, this time in a collaboration with the Ugandan ECKO BAZZ, the electronics of Braga’s own LUÍS FERNANDES, Rotten\Fresh’s co-founder USOF and Thai artist PISITAKUN, as well as three very recent collaborations between Portuguese artists: MÁ ESTRELA, a group led by saxophone player Pedro Alves Sousa in search of electronic spectrums outside jazz, POLY VUDUVUM, a duo made up by the multifaceted Diana Policarpo and Marta von Calhau, and the absolute debut of the duo of CAVERNANCIA & MARIA DA ROCHA, which brings together Barreiro’s Pedro Roque and the Lisbon violinist.

Festival passes can already be purchased for 30€ through BOL and its associated points of sale, and are also available online here: https://outra.bol.pt/

DEAFKIDS in a week / DUMA postponed

In a week's time, next Friday, June 3rd, we'll welcome the Brazillian band DEAFKIDS back to Barreiro after their explosive concert at OUT.FEST 2019. We had this to say about them back then (and they’re words we stand by): “They mix various aspects of initiatic hardcore punk, several declinations of metal, and a rhythmic tribalization which is a sort of a Sepultura via Motorhead-style psychedelic hard’n’heavy, with a lot of moments which are more on the abstract, with a lot of pages taken out of hairy rock with a ton of delay.” An unmissable event, as you can tell already, even more so due to the presence of Lisbon's CLEMENTINE and their power-garage-rock at the kick-off.

Meanwhile, we're sad to announce that the debut of Kenyan duo DUMA has been postponed due to issues with the European visa of one of the band's members. We're working with the musicians and their agents to schedule a new date for their show, sometime later this year. Tickets already purchased for the event will remain valid for this next date.

Tickets are still on sale for the Deafkids concert, as well as the one by FÖLLAKZOID*, on June 25th, at outra.bol.pt and its associated stores.

PARTICULAR UNIVERSAL: Knut Olaf Sunde is the next artist-in-residency at Castro Marim

Norwegian composer Knut Olaf Sunde, whose work revolves around notions of place, duration and immersion, is the next artist in residence in the Castro Marim Municipality, as part of the Particular Universal project.

Between April 23rd and May 7th he will “observe, learn and try to understand the different cultural and landscape logics” of the region, through sound and video recordings, as well as in conversation with the locals, with the aim of establishing a narrative, to be presented April 29th, at 5.30pm, at the Armazém do Sal - a free admission event.

This will be the second residence curated by NyMusikk, norwegian partner for the project, which is funded by the EEA Grants mechanism, with the theme “Identity, Memory and Landscape in Castro Marim”.
