Farida Amadou

A major European revelation in the fields of improvisation, jazz and noise, Brussels bassist Farida Amadou belongs to the lineage of great self-taught musicians who are able to reconfigure, almost completely, not only the role of their instruments but also the way to play them, the timbres they extract from them, and the internal logic of their musical constructions.

Armed with only an electric bass, an amplifier, and less than half a dozen effects pedals, Farida has been affirming a new musicality for her instrument in a context (that of free improvisation) where it seldom has the chance to shine, especially since the start of her collaboration with the magical British drummer Steve Noble in 2018 (who we saw in Barreiro in an unforgettable concert with Peter Brotzmann, at OUT.FEST 2016).

With an impressive CV for such a young artist (she has played with, besides Noble and Brotzmann himself, people such as Linda Sharrock, Ava Mendoza, Mette Rasmussen or Thurston Moore, for instance, as well as being a part of punk outfit Cocaine Piss), she arrives in Barreiro for the first time to help us hear the magic that hides within the body sustaining those four strings, even if we often can’t even imagine it there.

Fernando Ramalho

One of the excellent musicians who live - and we’re so happy to say it - in Barreiro, and also - and we’re even happier to state it - one of those who more thoroughly seek (and find) their own language, one made of treks through the eternal cliff of first times.

Through his guitar (sometimes acoustic, but mostly electric), prepared using many different techniques and objects, Fernando Ramalho, much like Farida Amadou, explores the possibilities of the instrument as a complete body, of music as nothing less than sound, of free improvisation as discovery, but also an homage to founding figures (with his version of Alvin Lucier’s seminal piece “I am sitting in a room”, who left us just a few months ago, as an example), as an exercise in appropriation and existential understanding of the role of the creator. A follower and cultivator of every form of poetic expression, that game of understandable beauty and incommunicable underground is revealed in his music, in every release and concert.
