On Ricardo Toscano ’s saxophone and Gabriel Ferrandini ’s drums rests the sublime lightness of the small miracle of jazz in Portugal, considering our country’s size and geography; two names who, each in his own way, are standard bearers of sorts of a generational renewal which, more than breaking away from a lineage (that we’re able to speak of an historical lineage of jazz in our country is another triumph in of itself), add new brave and audacious layers of complexity and contemporaneity.

It’s both beautiful and symbolic that this format - drums and reeds - so emblematic of free jazz as confrontation and sublimation, is responsible for (and this has been said too often, but we’ll insist on it) uniting, finally, two facets of jazz which are apparently distant, and often in opposition within our rectangle - one more indeed to tradition, and another with absolutely no concessions to anything but the destruction of canon. We can’t forget that Toscano’s voice, even if originating from a more ‘accessible’ tradition, is informed by the fire and poetry of the great trailblazers and travelers of the stars of the late 60’s, and that Ferrandini’s pulse, even if incensed by the unclassifiable and misunderstood, carries in its tendons all of the foundations of swing - a base which we love and instantly call jazz.

A concert, therefore, born from a meeting we could hardly imagine even three years ago and which, every time it takes place, explains without using words that music is intuition, nature, simbiosis and the sense that everything can be in its right place even if we didn’t understand it before.
