Alan Courtis & Os Heróis Indianos Romanos Africanos

Seven years (!) after the first revolutionary arrival from the Argentinian musician, sound explorer and educator Alan Courtis to Barreiro – working creatively with more than a dozen members of Associação NÓS – formerly known as “We2” but now definitively as “Heróis Indianos Romanos Africanos”, and three years after their last performance (this wonderful show, held at the very beginning of the pandemic, is available to watch in full here), it’s with the utmost pleasure that this project returns, living proof of the transforming power of music and its capacity to promote capability, autonomy and free expression.

Assisted by the musicians Bernardo Álvares and Leonardo Bindilatti, Alan Courtis and the “Heróis” get back together for a week of creative creation that culminates in a new live performance, at Biblioteca Municipal do Barreiro,, where little can be said about what to expect musically - more than genre or style, it’s the personality of each element and the collective identity that originates during the workshop that will certainly be heard; it’s safe to expect sonic poetry, psychedelia, free folk, adapted football anthems - but it’s best to leave tags and genres aside when the music will be, above all else, intensely free and unequivocally personal.

SONICA EKRANO – Full programme revealed

Olá a todos

As promised, today we reveal the programme for the first edition of SONICA EKRANO - Documentary film & the musical fringes, which will take place between the 9th and 18th of September in Barreiro and Baixa da Banheira (Moita Municipality).

This new festival, dedicated to the music, musicians, sounds and movements at the edges of massification and popularity, is a new space to provide the opportunity to watch cinematic works which remain (even in an age of digital platforms with on-demand content) hard to access, contributing to an increased audiovisual inclusiveness, striving to present a diversity of geographies and strike a balance between historical perspective and contemporary narratives.

Its first edition presents thirteen films, six of them national premieres, namely: Acid Mothers Reynols: Live and Beyond, by Alejandro Maly, which focuses on the Japanese band Acid Mothers Temple and the Argentinian Reynols who came together in 2017, in Buenos Aires, to create a joint record and concert;  Voice of the Eagle: The Enigma of Robbie Basho, by Liam Barker, about the unusual and extraordinary life of the north-american guitarist and composer Robbie Basho; The Albatross Around My Neck: Retracing Echoes of Loss Between Lucknow and Berlin, by Markus Schlaffkre, which presents us with Irfan Khan, one of the masters of the sarod, a string instrument part of the Hindustani musical tradition; Crestone, by Marnie Ellen Hertzler, which takes us to a deserted village in Colorado, where a micro-comunity of rappers lives in isolation, while sharing their music with the outside world through the Soundcloud online platform; Extreme Nation, by Roy Dipankar, a voyage through the indian subcontinent in search of the histories of the extreme mental community and subculture; and Delia Derbyshire: The Myths and Legendary Tapes, by Caroline Catz, a mix of documentary and biopic which portrays the personality and the precious legacy of one of electronic music's pioneers, the British composer Delia Derbyshire, whose career, while forever connected to the theme of the Doctor Who series, which she composed in 1963, goes far beyond it.

Besides this film dedicated to Delia Derbyshire, two other documentaries presented at SONICA EKRANO pay tribute to the recent wave of rediscovery of the pioneer women in electronic music. One of them is Sisters with Transistors, by Lisa Rovner, about the work and genius of the many women at the forefront of electronic music since its beginnings: Clara Rockmore, Daphne Oram, Bebe Barron, Maryanne Amacher, Pauline Oliveros, Wendy Carlos, Eliane Radigue and Laurie Spiegel. The other is Suzanne Ciani: A Life in Waves, by Brett Whitcomb, about the life and innovations developed by north-american artist Suzanne Ciani, and the way in which, starting from a classical music education, she became financially independent by creating music and sound for the world of advertising, using it as a canvas for exploration and revolutionary discoveries.

Portugal is also represented at the festival by two films: SOA, by Raquel Castro, which emerged from an investigation by the director into sound and soundscapes, silence and noise in all of the sound spectrum and its relation with those who hear them; and Caos e Afinidade, by Pedro Gonçalves, which dives into the world of improvised music in Portugal, whose centre is the Irreal Bar in Lisbon, and features the participation of names like Gabriel Ferrandini, Adriana Sá, Carlos Zíngaro and Luís Lopes. Both directors will be present at the sessions.

Wrapping up the programme for this first edition of SONICA EKRANO are the films Swans – Where Does a Body End?, by Marco Porsia, an extraordinary portrait of Michael Gira's Swans, who have built one of the most unique careers in modern rock music; Conny Plank: The Potential of Noise, by Reto Caduff and Stephan Plank, about one of the pioneers of krautrock and electronic pop, Conny Plank, who had a direct influence on bands and artists such as Neu!, Brian Eno, David Bowie, Ultravox or Eurythmics; and That Pärt Feeling: The Universe of Arvo Pärt, by Paul Hegeman, dedicated to the Estonian Arvo Pärt, probably the most celebrated living composer of our era.

These sessions will take place the the José Manuel Figueiredo Cultural Forum (9 to 12 September), the Barreiro Municipal Library (13 to 16 September) and the Augusto Cabrita Municipal Auditorium (17 and 18 September), and the tickets for the sessions at these last two venues are already on sale, while tickets for the sessions between the 9th and 12th will be available soon.

Stay tuned to all the news regarding the festival by following the festival's official website or its social media pages at facebook.com/sonicaekrano and instagram.com/sonicaekrano.

SONICA EKRANO is organized by OUT.RA – Associação Cultural, with co-financing by ICA, in partnership with the Barreiro and Moita municipalities and support by the Transportes Coletivos do Barreiro and Fórum Barreiro.

EM REDE II, from June 28th to July 2nd

The EM REDE festival is back for its second edition, once again helping to draw a musical portrait of present-day Barreiro.

After a first edition where 18 artists recorded solo performances in their homes, EM REDE II (with the current context of a controlled deconfinement in mind), focuses on, almost exclusively, performances by bands and collectives recorded at the iconic ADAO, with 10 shows broadcast over 5 days, from the 28th of June (Barreiro Day) and the 2nd of June, always at 21:30 at the Municipality’s YouTube channel.

The line-up presented during these five days, once again the fruit of a partnership between OUT.RA and the Municipality, goes even deeper into the aesthetic diversity of the music made in or connected to the city, bringing to the stage representatives of garage rock, heavy metal, hip hop, cotxi-pó and jazz, with figures as established as General D, Nídia and Pista and up and coming artists beyond the borders of the Municipality like Rafa G or New Mecanica.

Access to these shows is, as always, free, but we urge you to consider supporting the artists by purchasing their music and merchandise by following the available links to their online channels.

The artists

June 28th

B2R

A collective of rappers and producers from Barreiro formed this decade, based around Quint da Amoreira (in Alto do Seixalinho), active in crossing trap, drill and hints of afro-house with lyrics concerning their (our) reality. Along with the relevancy of their work, their videos bring forward new perspectives over some of the city’s distinct areas and daily lives.

THE BROOMS

Born from the ‘ashes’ of The Sullens, one of the city’s garage rock institutions, The Brooms are a quintet which lives up to their eternal promise of energy, electricity, vertigo and hypnosis. Fuzz, Vox, Beat & Groove!

June 28th

MONKEY CAGE

Quartet on a journey through the imaginary railway connecting Black Sabbath to Pixies, with stops at the Kyuss and Queens of the Stone Age stations. They’ve released “Be Well” this year, the second album in their discography.

NEW MECANICA

With three albums released to the world during a career spanning over a decade (the last of which, “Vehement”, was released by the Italian label “Wormhole Death Records” and distributed in Europe, the USA and Japan), New Mecanica is an all-Barreiro quintet carrying the torch of cohesive, powerful and socially aware metal.

Dia 30 de Junho

SCORPIONS

Following their “Roice Cosmos” tape, the trio Scorpions presents two new pieces at EM REDE: “Tubolata” and “Santander”, born from a continuous evolution starting from improvisation to cosmic composition.

GENERAL D

A pioneer of rap in Portugal, a citizen of the world (but also, on many occasions, of Barreiro’s urban area), General D brings us classics like 'Black Magik Woman' and 'África Nossa', as well as 'Zombie', which will be part of a new album to be released in 2021 which, in the artist’s words, “focuses on the ways in which social networks changed the relationship dynamics between populations”.

Dia 1 de Julho

PISTA

Tropical, cheerful and celebratory rock music bringing the summer heat to the remaining seasons, born from its members love of bicycles and music. After releasing their debut EP (“Pista”) and album (“Bamboleio”), they revisit their sound with a new album which promises to reach ever bigger heights: Ocreza.

OTAVINHO

Otavinho is part of a new generation of Afro-Portuguese people well connected to their roots, bringing new life to the stories and life experiences of their heritage. His music renews and carries on with tradition simultaneously - in this case, turning funaná into cotxi po, and radiates happiness even when lamenting sadness.

Dia 2 de Julho

RAFA G

From Vale da Amoreira to the world, Rafa G is one of the brightest new lights in truly urban music made in Portugal over the last two years. “Correria”, one of his first songs released on YouTube and already a classic on its own merits, has now over 4 million views and an enormous influence in the narrative of so many of the life experiences in peripheral neighborhoods throughout the country. He has just put out his first physical release, featuring appearances by artists like Deejay Telio, Minguito, Kappa Jotta and many others.

NÍDIA

A 23 year old producer who already is one of the great exporters of new Portuguese music, with press from all over the world (including the New York Times, for instance) gushing over her three (!) new releases in 2020. After her debut with the Príncipe label in 2015, she’s been travelling the world in performances and collaborations with people like Kelsey Lu, Lafawndah and Mica Live. She has since won a Grammi (the Swedish music industry’s equivalent to the Grammys) for producing a song by Swedish star Fever Ray.

Yann Gourdon at the Barreiro Municipal Library

We'll present three different concerts with changing line-ups (duos and a quartet) comprising musicians Ernesto Rodrigues (viola), Nuno Torres (alto saxophone), João Silva (trumpet) and Carlos Santos (electronics).

Of the quartet's performance intimacy and detail are to be expected, through the use of a non-conventional instrument techniques exploring notions of timbre, colour and shape. An aesthetic owing to a minimalist approach to free improvisation, in which the notions of silence and acoustic space are paramount.

LARAAJI (Biblioteca Municipal)

CANCELADO: WILLIAM PARKER / JOHN DIKEMAN / LUÍS VICENTE / ONNO GOVAERT

CONCERTO CANCELADO

Rafael Toral Space Quartet / Pedro Sousa, Rodrigo Pinheiro & Gabriel Ferrandini
